Powder Her Face on the intimate stage of the Takkelloftet

Powder Her Face at the Copenhagen Opera House: a modern clasic gets six performances in the Operaen's smaller “black box” theatre, the Takkelloftet.

The British composer Thomas Adès wrote this 2-act chamber opera in 1995, when he was 24 years old. The work created a scandal at the time as its subject matter was the extramarital exploits of the very liberated Duchess of Argyll who, in 1963, shook up the English establishment when a photo of her, naked except for three strands of pearls and in the position of the inverted lotus, made the rounds in the House of Commons. A sinner, therefore, like Violetta in Verdis La Traviata. Adès work shows the influences of jazz cabaret and Stravinsky. After over 200 performances worldwide, Powder Her Face has become a classic.
