La Zona, Iberian flavours in Fort Worth

Tapas, cocktails and churros: Fort Worth in Spanish style.

These two small limewashed store fronts labelled “Hotel Madrid” and “Saint Sofia” are the highlights of West Magnolia Avenue. A little wisp in the air reminds one of Marfa, the western Texas town in the middle of the desert— maybe because of the clay ground surrounding the two buildings. Hotel Madrid, the restaurant-bar with a cosy European atmosphere, will be a nice change of scenery from the cowboy hangouts in the city. The tiled bar attracts quite a crowd at happy hour. Order something to eat as well: boquerones, cheeses or fried squid recall Spain, while wood-fire baked pizzas remind you of the Mediterranean. Feel like churros, coffee or ice cream? Head for the small adjacent building, Saint Sofia, just across the patio bordered with desert plants. The perfect place to observe the comings and goings of the crowd on Magnolia Avenue, while sipping on a sangria or cocktail, in moderation of course.
