Juice boost after the New York marathon

There you are, 3 November 2019, after the New York marathon. Whether you are watching or running, you deserve a pick-me-up. Fortunately, the city has become the default capital of natural juices.

Post-marathon vitamin boost

Whether before a physically demanding endeavour or to recover afterwards, a refreshing and invigorating juice is just the ticket. To find the perfect juice combo in New York, look no further than Liquiteria. Established in the Big Apple since 1996, the brand is quickly becoming the go-to place. As well as traditional fruit juices cold-pressed in front of you, the menu offers a multitude of preparations using vegetables, aromatic herbs, seeds and so on. Before the event, you will probably opt for a Green Monster, a formula recommended for physical effort as it combines banana, cider vinegar, plant proteins and strawberries – a cocktail that will give you all the energy you need.

Once the 2019 marathon is over, you will need to recharge your batteries, so treat yourself to a strawberry, lemon and cashew nut milkshake: the fruits contain powerful antioxidants which will help prevent aches and pains, and the nuts are rich in proteins to help your stressed muscles recover. Unless, of course, you choose one of the insanely creamy smoothies which combine chocolate- or vanilla-flavoured almond milk and ingredients that are full of vitamins and full of taste, such as cacao, vanilla or coconut.

If, however, you are only there to cheer on the marathon runners, an All Greens will probably suffice. Prepared with kale, spinach, parsley, rosemary, celery and cucumber, this drink also contains a lot fewer calories. Liquiteria is spreading throughout New York, but its shop in Chelsea is really worth the detour. Tucked away in a lovely red-brick building, it also has the added advantage of introducing you to one of the most vibrant neighbourhoods in the Big Apple. Bordered by the Hudson River, the district is home to over 200 art galleries. Do not miss Matthew Marks' historic and renowned gallery: with paintings, illustrations and photos, the work on display is both eclectic and fascinating.

The New York raw-food trend

Much more recently, the Butcher's Daughter brand has taken up the same nutritional basics with good, fresh and healthy organic food. Located in Brooklyn, the novelty of the place lies in the preparation of its drinks. As the name suggests, fruits are simply chopped, filleted and carved, just like a butcher does, and then pressed. And why is that? To preserve all their flavour and nutritional qualities.

The raw-food theme continues in the interior design at Butcher's Daughter: the atmosphere is all very green, making use of natural materials, such as wood, and raw materials, such as concrete, with a generous garnish of lush plants. It all works to create a bright and soothing space. Make sure you sit in to drink your juice so that you can soak up the harmonious surroundings. That is part of the experience intended by Heather Tierney and Brandi Kowalski, the brand's founders.

If you ever happen to feel a little bit off form, try their homemade Deep Clean cure: the two partners have concocted a drink of five green juices including cucumber, lemon, seaweed and courgette. They then add a smoothie mix of almond milk and dates. New Yorkers cannot get enough of it.

Drinking healthily in NYC is lifted to the art of good living… And the Museum of Food and Drink, located ten minutes away on foot, will certainly not disagree. Opened in 2015 in the heart of the hipster neighbourhood of Williamsburg, this huge space sees itself as a modern temple dedicated to the culinary arts. The museum is particularly interested in the way different cuisines intermingle in the United States and reflect the idea of American multiculturalism. Exhibits are visited… and tasted: a culinary studio next to the exhibition rooms invite visitors to taste the showcased cuisine. At the moment, the famous ‘Chow' Chinese restaurants are the focus of an exhibition at the MOFAD.

Warm and flavoursome

Perhaps not everyone in your entourage is a distinguished athlete. However, that should not stop you adopting a healthy lifestyle. It was on this principle that two brothers created Bq Juice Smoothies; along with good practices, physical activity in the great outdoors and yoga in Central Park, juices are also good for your health. They therefore decided to launch a business producing craft drinks made from fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables that have not had far to travel. Their watchwords are quality, freshness and flavour. And not forgetting the simple notion of pleasure, of course.

So, the menu features classic and novel compositions, a delight to smell as well as to drink: bananas, strawberries, honey, goji and acai berries and almond milk for sweetness; mangoes, pineapples and apple cider for a touch of tartness. And as it is November and New York winter is on its way, you might like to order a warm, homemade cider: it originally comes from the north of the state and also contains cinnamon, camomile, hibiscus, orange zest and a hint of roast chicory. What better way to warm the cockles of the bravest marathoners?

If you want to gently unwind after this visit, head over to Tompkins Square Park. Wander round this unusual, rural park at a gentle pace: surrounded by old majestic trees, New Yorkers enjoy a game of table tennis or a Tai Chi session, or else they walk their dogs in the areas reserved for our four-legged friends… so that they too can run their own marathon!
