Day 1: a breath-taking view and squirrels

In the morning, in the first light of dawn, head for the Rockefeller Center. As your admission tickets are already booked, your little group can head up in the lift to the 70th floor. The doors open and there you are at the Top of the Rock Observation Deck. Take your time to look at the most beautiful view of New York: to the north, Central Park and Times Square; to the south, the sun lights up the Empire State Building and the southern tip of Manhattan. In winter, do not forget to visit the legendary ice rink located right next to the building. You can glide over the ice with the family underneath a huge Christmas tree in a dream-like setting.

After this striking urban panorama, visit the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Your children will be blown away to discover this museum based in an enormous aircraft carrier. Their eyes will open wide in amazement when they see the American space shuttle Enterprise and the supersonic aircraft exhibited.

All this excitement will make you feel peckish. How about having your first American burger? You can reach the Shake Shack restaurant in Madison Square Park on foot, where the menu overflows with milkshakes and ice creams. A sound choice, one endorsed by Barack Obama!

In the afternoon, stroll around the streets lined with imposing buildings. Get some fresh air in the legendary Central Park and watch New Yorkers jogging and rollerblading. Why not follow their lead and enjoy a game of Frisbee with the family? If they have any energy left, let your children run after the squirrels and tire themselves out in Central Park Playground, a unique place to play with the skyscrapers in the background. If they are fans of Alex the lion from the animated cartoon Madagascar, make their dreams come true by taking them to the zoo in the Park to meet snow leopards, red pandas and grizzly bears.

When this adventure is over, return to the hotel for some time out… before setting off in high spirits to the Ninja, a themed restaurant known all over New York. It is a temple to Japanese gastronomy, accessible to all and particularly noted for its spectacular, Samurai-inspired presentation. You can introduce your littlest ones to Japanese cuisine: there is a children's menu precisely for this purpose.

Day 2: discover the must-see attractions with the family

A second day devoted to the unmissable sights of New York. Bright and early, take the first ferry to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Viewed from a distance on the Hudson River, the Manhattan skyline will surprise you. At the immigration museum, you can introduce your youngsters to the cosmopolitan history of the city and its migrants: the best? The audio guides are free for all the family. Take the ferry again to Liberty Island, where you can visit the Statue of Liberty. Climb the 354 steps to admire the crown from close-up. Designed in Paris by Auguste Bartholdi and Gustave Eiffel then completed in 1886, it was offered by France to the United States on the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Today it symbolises the freedom of peoples throughout the world.

On your return to Manhattan, take the subway to Greenwich Village, where you can enjoy strolling through the tree-lined backstreets with their redbrick buildings. Walk as far as Soho for a big name shopping session. In the Urban Outfitters concept store, a temple to home decor, with retro sportswear and fashion accessories, your teenager will not know where to start. Offer them a pair of customised shoes. Success guaranteed!

Leave the hustle and bustle of the main thoroughfares for the tranquillity of High Line, New York's most beautiful hanging park. Go the length of this 2 km long green corridor, created on a former railway line. Appreciate the views of the Hudson River, the docks and the rooftops of Lower Manhattan. The stroll continues through an industrial setting worthy of a movie set.

The frenetic Times Square is located not far from its northern end. This way, you will arrive amongst the famous buildings lit up with hypnotic advertisements on giant screens. If you want to see your kid's eyes sparkle, drop in to M&M's Store, a vast store featuring giant mascots and packed with branded gadgets. Then wait until night fall comes and makes the site even more magical.

Day 3: from the Natural History Museum to Brooklyn

To begin your last day in New York, relive your children's favourite film, Night at the Museum, at the Museum of Natural History in Central Park. What with palaeontology-focused activities, a reconstructed dinosaur and exciting exhibitions, everyone will find something to their taste. Remember to book your tickets for the Space Show which retraces the history of the universe.

Then head across Manhattan by subway to explore Brooklyn. Get off at High Street station and have lunch at Luke's Lobster. Do as New York families do and sample these tasty lobster sandwiches! Even the youngest should love them. After this meal, why not take a family walk in the park along the East River, where you can see the superb widescreen view of Manhattan.

Next up, a little jaunt through the vast area of Brooklyn is a must. Explore the bohemian district of Williamsburg and its hipsters. If the kids are getting bored, take them to the Mast Brothers artisan chocolate factory which will get everyone's vote!

Are you fans of street art? Explore the Bushwick neighbourhood with your older teenagers, where the disused factories and warehouses have been decorated with immense open-air frescoes. Retrace your steps and cross the most photographed bridge in the world, Brooklyn Bridge, towards Manhattan. This evening, you have decided to share a special moment with your basketball loving child. Attend an NBA match in Madison Square Garden, and drink in the supercharged 100 % new-yorker atmosphere.
