Founded in 1742 by Portuguese immigrants, the city has become one of Brazil's main industrial and commercial centres. Its principal economic activity is the export of soya, meat, rice and leather. Porto Alegre's climate varies with the four seasons. In summer (December to March) it is very hot, around 35°. In winter, from June to September, the temperature can fall to 0°. Porto Alegre is at the geographical centre of the principal routes in the Southern Cone, equidistant from Buenos Aires , Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro .
