Napoleon III and Eugenie invite at FONTAINEBLEAU
The lifestyle under the Second Empire
December 9, 2011 - March 5, 2012
For this exhibition, the Château de Fontainebleau has granted a loan of about 170 works. Around the two famous portraits of Napoleon III and Eugenie by Winterhalter, the selected objects allow to evoke the private apartments of the couple: the smoking room, the winter garden, the theater, and especially the Chinese boudoir of the Empress. One can also discover one of the never-used 250 guest apartments identically reconstituted for the exhibition.
The originality of this selection is its authenticity and its imperial origin. Besides the furniture and objects of art, curtains, armchairs tapestries and fabrics that will be exhibited are all coming from the furniture repository of Fontainebleau.
In Bordeaux and its close region, the comfortable style of the French Second Empire has also pleased the upper bourgeoisie and numerous private decoration sets illustrate its eclecticism, today put back to the honor.
